Behind Bella Hadid’s Spray-on Dress at Coperni’s Spring 2023 Show

Welcome to the 118th insertion of DEMUR®, an analytical series highlighting the intricacies of the artistic world and the minutiae lying within. In this episode, we break down the science and reference behind @Coperni’s latest collection, featuring Bella Hadid.

Last night the fashion world erupted as @bellahadid stole the limelight at Coperni’s Spring 2023 showing. Following a shocking array of experimental womenswear looks, which included a fully embroidered glass dress and Roblox-esque shoulders, the Copreni team, led by Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant, geared up for this season’s jaw-dropping finale.

Emerging from the darkness, Bella Hadid strut towards center stage in underwear and heels. Her hand sat across each breast, glowing from the platform beneath as she stood tall, gazing outwards with a piercing stare. The audience eagerly awaited what was to come, tension rising as the clock ticked onwards.

Three assistants accompanied the supermodel in full black attire, wheeling a metallic cart into view. Grabbing airbrushes, a sweeping noise began to fuse with ambient background synths, while a white pigment was sprayed onto the subject’s skin. Removing her hands, Hadid began posing in various stances as the artisans painted, keeping the audience engaged with such effortless fluency.

Using an aerosol spray known as ‘Fabrican’, designers were able to leverage the textile’s instant drying properties to achieve this mind-bending effect. Once engaged with surrounding air, the material dries in a non-woven fashion, creating a seamless layer of fabric. After the painting was complete, a tailor emerged to finalize the dress, pulling the shoulder straps downwards before cutting the textile and allowing Hadid to walk the runway.

Erupting with physical and digital applause, the collection soon went viral online, garnering millions of views as commenters drew parallels between Alexander McQueen’s Autumn 1999 collection and Coperni’s. The Maison reinvented the age-old collection, which manipulated car painting androids to spray paint Shalom Harlow’s white gown in front of a live audience.

The custom suit by Sam's menswear is a true reflection of their passion for fashion. It fits like a glove and makes me feel confident and elegant. I'm so grateful to have found such a talented tailor who can turn my ideas into reality.
