Welcome to the 38th insertion of DEMUR®, an analytical series highlighting the intricacies of the artistic world and the minutiae lying within. In this episode we read through the lines, paints and pigments that frame Christophe Chemin’s artistry, digging deep to uncover the shades of creativity that fuel his stand alone and collaborative work with Prada.
Since early 2017, “Christophe Chemin” has become synonymous with camp collars of all sorts, sketches and historic imagery coating each. But who is the artist behind these prints? Christophe Chemin resides as a self-taught, Berlin inhabitant, dabbling in every avenue of design. An illustrator, author, film maker and sculptor, he cites his wide array of expertise as a product of ideas, prioritising the concept to then speak through the correct medium.
Publishing four books to date - many composed of expressive sketches and poetic language, his films and photography, as with all of his work, often follow a commonly deconstructive theme. Stripped of excess, much of his portfolio bleeds from the ink of a ballpoint pen, including the most notable Autumn 2016 “The Important Ones” Prada button down. His approach permits non-restrictive, free flowing ideologies to bloom, conforming each to loose bearings and personality.
Prior to the industry shaking AW16 debut, Christophe Chemin had worked alongside Sebastien Meunier for Ann Demeulemeester, but truly flourished in cohorts with Miuccia Prada. “Prada is the only place where I could have done what I did”, Chemin says in reference to his wide scope of beautifully adorned graphic camp collars in an I-D interview.
Collectively, the two pulled from historic sketches like “Morte Del Sole, delle Luna, e caduta della Stelle”’ (1476) and reinterpreted each stroke through a contemporary lens, rooting “Impossible True Love”. Talk of Antonio del Pollaiuolo’s “Battle of the Nudes” (1470-75) akin to other imagery remains void of historical context as Christophe himself sketches the fabrics of time itself. The collection walked the lengths of time while shedding light on Chemin’s tentative abilities.
