Welcome to the 210th insertion of DEMUR®, an analytical series highlighting the intricacies of
the artistic world and the minutiae lying within. In this episode, we uncover pop culture’s dark side, looking at celebrity's invasive nature, obsessive fanbases, and the impact of elitist groups.
From the outside looking in, a life full of glamour, cash and fame is no doubt hard to sympathize for. Sell-out shows and mortgage-level drug money sounds like nothing short of a dream for the average North American, let alone an aspiring artist. Standing above the law, with a “want it, have it” attitude, our perceptions of pop culture have been warped, distorted and flipped on their heads, all at the grips of media outlets and industry leaders.
It’s no secret that behind the cover of drama-centric magazines and trashy reality TV lies a sea of silenced mental health problems and corruption. Giving way to global breakdowns like Britney Spears’ umbrella episode back in 2009, or Michael Jackson’s dangling baby in 2002, it's pretty hard to make a case for highly invasive paparazzi and inescapable fame. In fear of getting mobbed while critics analyze your every move, it seems as if the life of the rich and famous is more-so rooted in judgment and barred freedom.
Looking at the long list of child stars that are either in rehab, sex work, jail, or at worst, dead, we can draw a comparison between the “perks” of being famous and the negatives that continue to gloom in the shadows of million-dollar contracts. Glorified as the Stars of Hollywood, these individuals are worshipped creatives that were thrown into the limelight and feasted upon for their mistakes.
Unsurprisingly, the dark side of pop culture is the most enticing and best-selling news of all, manipulating a small misjudgement for the downfall of a celebrity’s career. Reporting and profiting off personal relationships is somehow normalized without regard for the subject at hand, allowing the media to exploit and distort one’s highs and lows. Eternally damaging the lives of so many, we can only imagine the implications of hate, false narratives and cancellation.
