From Slogan Tees to Stüssy Jeans, a Recap of 2022’s Hottest Fashion Trends

Welcome to the 147th insertion of DEMUR®, an analytical series highlighting the intricacies of the artistic world and the minutiae lying within. In this episode, we revisit some of our favourite trends from this past year, compiling the best (and worst) of 2022.

As we slowly crept from our quarantine circles back in January, excitement began to stir. Anticipation grew as the fashion industry awoke from its slumber, bursting with new ideas in the wake of a new era. Despite such warm attitudes, the North’s cold weather prompted many to gravitate towards the varsity jacket as a first choice for outerwear. Among trench coats and an extension of last year’s puffer trend, a tonal palette dominated the field, in light hues of cream and forest green.

But about headwear? Those who usually opt for beanies may have reached for fitted caps this season, earning New Era, Yankee and White Sox motifs as this year’s most unavoidable logos. Through a fury of collaborations and meme spin-offs like @staffnyc’s Kung Lao full brim Yankee hat, we saw athletic wear surge, aided by an overhaul of Arc’Teryx, C.P. Company and Stone Island apparel. In light of such adventurous wear, let’s not forget about balaclavas either, plagued celebrities like Pooh Shiesty and Yeat.

As we transitioned into warmer temperatures, slogan tees quickly became 2022’s hottest trend. In command of the Instagram explore page, ironic hot takes demanded reshares, likes and controversy, feeding off of easily recyclable attributes. Gearing up for summer, flared trousers came in full swing, completing the triangle figure with skin-fitting tees and bellowing bottoms. Around this time, Balenciaga made waves with their ‘Raver’ denim, igniting a fury of maximalist, gothic cargo pants, with emphasis on weight and construction.

Following the unbearable heat, fleeces gained traction as wardrobes swapped from summer to fall. Stüssy and Oakley stood tall at the top of our ‘brands to watch’ list, continuously selling out workwear essentials in pair with luxury and sport. Similarly, Apple’s AirPod Max headphones kept those ears cozy as an unexpected essential.
