How is Technology Changing the Way We Perceive and Interact with Fashion?

Welcome to the 26th insertion of DEMUR®, an analytical series highlighting the intricacies of the artistic world and the minutiae lying within. In this episode we’re asking how technology is changing the way we view fashion, how we interact with it, and what we can expect in the near future.

Living in a technology reliant era, the modern age has seen a drastic pivot towards an electronic infrastructure. What was once classified as a super computer now resides in the humble abode of your pocket, and it appears the largest influence of this century is completely accredited to one thing - technology. Massive leaps in design, speed and power have allowed for possibilities once unheard of, especially in the world of fashion.

In regard to presentation and design, applications like 3D printing and the Metaverse are at the forefront of advancement. Designer Iris Van Herpen has been bending the rules of couture by implementing 3D printed garments for years. Meanwhile, as we approach the next generation of tech, coined Web 3.0, labels are gearing up to paramount industry competitors in the virtual world.

Labels like Balenciaga, Stefan Cooke, Louis Vuitton and Burberry have been minting, and beginning to present 2021’s hottest item - NFT’s. As a chariot to exclusivity, non-fungible articles will debut as garments of the future for your avatar, in a one-of-one medium. Balenciaga’s Denma Gvasalia has taken this even further, staging the entirety of their Spring 22’ collection with deep fake avatars, including the models.

The expansion of textile longevity, production cost and resource management are all factors that will see refinement as technology develops further as well. Plant based fabrics like Ananas Anam’s Piñatex - a pineapple leaf textile, completely recycle otherwise wasted materials as a result of mechanical design.

Runway videos are a presentation form often overlooked, but remain symbolic of just how quick the industry adapts to new ideals. This trend will continue and items - physical or virtual, will be worn in new ways. The possibilities are endless, yet impossible to predict.
