Moncler x Palm Angles Fiber Optic ‘Maya’ Jacket Lights up the Future (2022)

Welcome to the 122nd insertion of DEMUR®, an analytical series highlighting the intricacies of the artistic world and the minutiae lying within. In this episode, we break down the science behind Moncler’s recent collaboration with Palm Angles, showcasing a hard-to-miss jacket, even in the dark.

Yesterday, Francesco Ragazzi, Palm Angels founder and creative director, took to Instagram (@other_matters) to unveil Moncler’s latest release. Jaws dropped as enthusiasts gazed upon Ragazzi’s take on the classic ‘Maya’ puffer jacket, which appeared to be glowing in a dimly lit room.

The jacket itself, which comes in a harsh tone of white, features embossed ‘Palm Angles’ lettering on the underside, among the classic Moncler chenille chest patch. When turned on, the puffer lights up to reveal hundreds of fiber optic cables embedded in the fabric itself, creating a unique glow as it’s worn. Wireless, the jacket is entirely freestanding, restricted only by the battery’s lifespan, allowing for endless mobility and use, but how does it work?

While complex, fiber optic fabric isn’t new, seen in applications like costume and interior design for decades. Beginning by weaving small, 0.25 mm plastic tubing into a standard loom, the manufacturing process only differs regarding regulated temperatures and dyed treating processes. Once the weave is complete, ends are severed using specialized fiber optic cutters and attached to a side-lit LED bulb, which transmits light through the many plastic veins.

This recent partnership is certainly Ragazzi’s most profound work under the Moncler label but is far from his debut. “I started in 2006, when I was 21, with an internship in the press department.” he stated in a Highsnobiety interview, “I had the occasion to work on brand identity and imagery, and at last, I became the artistic director.” he continued.

After leaving to embark on what has become Palm Angels, Moncler Genius, the brand’s highly experimental counterpart, approached the designer to create something new. In a full circle moment, the light-up Maya jacket will release on October 10th, 2022.
