The Evolution of Robin William's Style

Welcome to the second insertion of DEMUR®, a series where we will be highlighting some of the most interesting topics in all of art. This week we’ll be looking through the archives of Robin Williams cutting edge style一from streetwear to couture, he did it all.

Notorious for his outlandish and bold aesthetic, Williams was not one to shy away from a look. Showcased best in his 1992 red carpet appearance for “Toys”, a movie in which he starred in, Williams strutted a custom suit tailored by none other than Giancarlo Giannini. Fitted with physical toys, i.e wires, speakers and motherboards, this insane jacket is said to have been fully functional, making noises when worn. The embellishments sat atop a single breasted blazer, contrasting gorgeously against each detail. Nothing was ever too crazy for the fashion enthusiast himself.

Robin Williams was a jack of all trades. He often dabbled in the world of luxury, seen wearing the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier and Acronym, however his affinity for lavish goods didn’t stop there. An avid watch collector, the icon had amassed over 40 timepieces throughout the years, the most expensive of such being a $35,000 USD white gold Franck Muller minute repeating tourbillion. Williams had a taste for extravagance, but that didn’t take away from his undying love of streetwear and skatecore brands.

A self-titled “Bape Head”, Robin Williams was undoubtedly one of the first to hop on to Japanese street culture. Religiously wearing Nigo era Bape, Issey Miyake cargo bombers, Visvim Jackets and more, the actor silently debuted a new catalogue to Western culture. Solidifying his overarching status as a Harajuku legend, his daughter, Zelda Williams, accounted “I remember going into Bape with him as a kid and he knew EVERYONE that worked there”. He was constantly engulfed in the now iconic full print Ape Camo, emerging in countless photographs at any event.

Robin Williams has evidently cemented himself across a plethora of styles and niches. Always staying true to himself, never letting the formality of an industry sway him. The epitome of individuality and a persona that will prosper forever.

Rest In Peace Robin Williams.
