Welcome to the 203rd insertion of DEMUR®, an analytical series highlighting the intricacies of the artistic world and the minutiae lying within. In this episode, we investigate the “come up”, explaining the importance of chasing your dreams, the glamorization of struggle and the untold truth of success.
In a world where 92% of currency exchanged is digital, it seems we've stumbled upon a new era of entrepreneurship. With the help of social platforms like TikTok, for the first time ever, users have a similarly equal opportunity to grow a following and sell a product. Enticing youth worldwide to pick up their phone and record a video, post a tweet, or perhaps even go live, it appears there’s never been a better time to chase one’s dreams.
While this argument certainly has merit, the reality of entrepreneurship in a virtual setting and a highly competitive and oversaturated market is a complex and will-driven venture. From the ever-changing algorithm, to shadow bans and cancel culture, preserving creative freedom while maintaining a sense of authenticity can prove to be extremely difficult. Regardless of the mere chance to break out and achieve virality, pushing consistent and engaging posts is a tricky yet achievable feat, full of trials and tribulations.
However, these seemingly insurmountable feats quickly become the backbone of one’s drive through obsession and grit. Regardless of others’ beliefs, the grind is slow and unforgiving, yet unparalleled in reward. Remembered as the “glory days”, the pursuit of success is oftentimes a fight both in and externally, fuelling some while breaking the majority. Trading hours of labour for seconds of praise, one is quickly reminded to chase their dreams not for the fame or glory, but for the love of their craft.
Spoken best by the esteemed Tom Clancy, “An overnight success is ten years in the making”. Be it painting, music or fashion, in today’s age, there is always room for more content and in turn more competitors. Nonetheless, so long as one can achieve just 5% superiority among the surrounding competition, the result is infinitely exponential - so get after it!
