2013 Pyrex Vision by Virgil Abloh ‘23’ Red Checkered Long Sleeve Flannel

In the early months of 2013, Virgil Abloh ignited a fury of rage after selling out a series of customized Polo Rugby flannels at a 700% markup. Having purchased the blanks directly from Polo’s mall outlet stores at a minuscule $79.85, the rather unknown creative would screen print ‘PYREX 23’ on the back of each, leaving all of the original branding and tags intact. Posting a limited run on his website at $550 USD, the green, red and blue flannels sold out within minutes, stirring outrage among #BEEN #TRILL supporters and Donda fans alike. Making many question whether the move was a publicity stunt, or a mere social experiment, the fact of the matter was that Abloh had not only pocketed thousands of dollars, but proven his cultural influence on a global scale. Catching wind of mainstream media outlets, the Pyrex flannels would birth one of the most iconic articles of Virgil Abloh’s career, titled “No One Should Have All Those Rugby Flannel” by Jian DeLeon of Fourpins. Within, the editor pulled the veil on Abloh’s methodologies, stating “It’s highly possible Virgil Abloh simply bought a bunch of Rugby flannels, slapped “PYREX 23” on the back, and re-sold them for an astonishing markup of about 700%”. Funnily enough, Jim Joe, a contemporary artist and friend of Abloh, would reimagine the statement and weave it into a rug, which, years later, would be gifted to DeLeon by Abloh himself.

Debuting in 2013, this notorious flannel comes in the standout cherry red colour way. Adorned with white “PYREX 23” lettering on the back, it’s complete with Polo Ralph Lauren emblems on the neckline, and a chest pocket to finish.
