AW02 Junya Watanabe ‘Loose Gauge’ Distressed Wool Sweater
Junya Watanabe’s Autumn 2002 collection came as a melancholic, moody runway, fit with dark, cool tones and a series of backless dresses. Set in the Salle Wagram, a large venue in the heart of Paris, France, Watanabe stated that he “was feeling in the dark” this season. Explaining the gloomy, satin textiles and angsty 1930s style cuts, throughout each look, accessory or head piece, he’d refrain from any jarring hues or overbearing techniques, instead guiding the viewer to look deeper into the patterns and overarching silhouettes. While rather tame, this runway exemplified what Watanabe does best, displaying an otherwise u unheard of grasp on complex subtleties and elegance.
Debuting in the Autumn of 2002, this unique wool sweater comes in a discreet, sea green hue. Layered with two panels of wool, a series of asymmetric, abstract holes are cut in the front facing textile to reveal the contrasting pigment below. Coming with a cropped body, the sleeves are then elongated, accenting the torso, while maintaining a long profile. Fitting a size small, in pristine condition throughout.
