AW08 Maison Margiela ‘Thriller’ Quilted Puffer Biker Jacket

Martin Margiela’s Fall 2008 collection marked the Maison’s 20th anniversary. Straying from his typical, deconstructive design theories, the creative would opt for an unusual amalgamation of textiles like barbed wire, snakeskin and waxed, then microwaved and finally baked leathers. From suiting to biker wear, and an extremely unexpected ode to Michael Jackson, the collection’s only consistent theme was found in each model’s eyewear, which brimmed the eyes as a visor-like accessory known as ‘L’Incognito’. In all, the look book left critics in a haze of fever dream ideologies and confusing opinions, however, the exhibit was certainly of work of Margiela himself, as a series of grail tier items blossomed in it’s legacy.

Debuting in the Fall of 2008 as the collection’s ‘black sheep’, this quilted biker jacket stands as an obscure ode to the late Michael Jackson. Particularly, it plays on the signer’s iconic ‘Thriller’ music video, in which Jackson sports a structured leather biker, adorned with a black M. Inverting the overcoat’s palette to use red, an prominent hue in Margiela’s design career, to depict the ‘M’ motif, he swaps leather for a quilted puffer textile. Finished with a high collar, zippered welt pockets and a perfectly light weight, slim fit. Tagged as a size 48 or medium, in pristine condition throughout.
