AW12 Maison Margiela x H&M ‘Belt’ Reworked Leather Jacket
For Maison Margiela’s collaboration with H&M back in the Fall of 2012, the two labels would redux a series of Martin’s best designs. Drawing from a wide scope of iconic shows, pieces like the Autumn ‘99 Duvet coat, Autumn ‘08 collared circle shirt and faceless watch belt from Autumn ‘09 would debut alongside both new season and career-defining items. Taking aim at the widely unattainable artisanal line, together the unlikely duo would shift the fashion paradigm as excitement grew upon announcement. Prompting many to raid H&M retail stores for a chance to get their hands on some of Martin’s best work over the past three decades, they’d maintain the label’s prestigious reputation, releasing each item in extremely limited quantities.
As the undisputed reigning kingpin of the Margiela x H&M effort, this belt jacket originates in the Fall of 2007. Worn by countless celebrities since release, the overcoat was the highest priced product from the collection, selling out instantly before appearing on second hand markets. Unique in its construction, the biker silhouette features a series of leather belts, sewn together to create both a torso and sleeves. Falling off of the body, buckles and excess leather create an incredible silhouette, hugging the torso in a fully tonal palette. Tagged as a size extra large, in pristine condition throughout.
