AW17 Vetements ‘Bridges I Burn’ Cropped Slogan Hoodie

The overarching theme of Demna Gvasilia’s Autumn 2017 collection at Vetements was change. Having mastered the art of graphic design, the hoodie silhouette, and the luxury streetwear market, Gvasilia set out to conquer a new array of silhouettes through an acute lens. Looking to our social uniforms for inspiration, the designer as always began reinterpreting dress codes through ironic, maximalist expression. While straying from his roots, he maintained a core graphic-centric muse, speaking through physical embellishments and movement. Models sporting camo prints were to reveal peace keeping symbols as they turned their backs, similar to the ‘nerd’ who sported a Borbour jacket. Using a heightened comedic medium, Gvasilia was able to invoke an otherwise ignored curiosity, as with change comes new perspective.

Debuting in the Autumn of 2017, this hoodie is adorned with one of the most iconic slogans from Demna Gvasalia’s career. Reading ‘May The Bridges I Burn Light The Way’, the Georgian designer references a quote from an episode of Beverly Hills 90210 that aired in 1994. Titled ‘Things That Go Bang in The Night’, the episode illustrates Dylan McKay, a fictional character played by Luke Perry, who’s just woken up out of a suspected overdose. Brandon Walsh, played by Jason Priestly, attempts to have an impromptu intervention with McKay, as he sinks deeper into the grips of drug addiction. Following an argument, Walsh tries to offer a helping hand, stating, “Dylan, at this point in time, I’m just about the only friend you’ve got. You sure you want to do this? Push me away like you’ve done to everyone else?”, to which McKay responds “Yeah! May the bridges I burn light the way!”. Printed atop a heavyweight maroon hoodie, the now infamous slogan has developed a cult-like following of its own. Crafted with an aluminum support piece on either shoulder seam, this hoodie is accented with Vetements embroidery on the hood and a cropped torso. Tagged as a size extra small, in pristine condition throughout.
