Riccardo Tisci’s time at Givenchy was a gothic trip entailing romanticized contempt for traditional haute couture. At the helm of the maison for 12 years (2005-2017), Tisci left a substantial impact on the label before his departure. Refusing to shy away from the grips of avant-garde, the Italian designer conceptualized infamous looks and glaring motifs during his career, then moving to his position at Burberry.

The Fall 2011 show plastered snarling Rottweilers in an unapologetic manner. From bags to scarves and shorts to bombers, the grotesque breed eyed down the audience in gruelling way. The print symbolized the feeling of alienation Tisci’s work often emits, using the Rottweiler as a symbol. The dog breed is often viewed under a negative light as a result of fierce animosity, despite many elevating attributes. This premise is heavily reminiscent of the public view on gothic style, a theme Riccardo Tisci heavily resonates with. The creative uses the motif to grapple with this negative connotation and forces each viewer each to truly embrace and analyze the feeling of discomfort and prejudice. The Rottweiler is not only an iconic graphic but also a caveat to design, emotionally and aesthetically.

The bags shown are a beautiful encapsulation of the Fall 2011 collection. The larger of the two - Givenchy’s Antigona silhouette, features a large print of Rottweiler as well as gold branding just above. The smaller change pouch is then clasped with an inner extremity, held with a metallic zipper as well. Both in pristine condition overall.
