As Watanabe’s craft developed, he was promoted to creative director under the Tricots Comme Des Garcons knitwear line. This spotlight allowed his brilliance to flourish, minimalistic yet intricately designed pieces flaunting the runway shortly after. Spending the next few years honing and finalizing his abilities, in 1992 Rei Kawakubo proposed the idea of his own namesake under the Comme Des Garcons label. This was the birth of Comme Des Garçons Junya Watanabe MAN.

 

The Spring Summer 2005 collection was vibrant, outlandish and heavily hike core. Ahead of it’s time, the show focused on garments with utilitarian purpose—multi-use items all within a neon colour palette. Junya Watanabe experimented with a variety of patterns and hiking attire, even fitting models with carabiners and heaps of paracord. He implemented cargo pockets on many designs, and used weather resistant textiles, like Gore-Tex, to truly solidify the desired aesthetic. An unusual project for Watanabe that stemmed garments of the future, perfectly blending with aesthetics of the now.

 

Debuting in a variety of energetic colourways, this tactical jacket is comprised of a sky blue Gore-Tex shell and mesh/nylon interior. Equipped with a latching frontal strap which doubles as a carrying belt when transformed, alongside zipped ventilation flaps and velcro hems.
