Debuting in Raf Simons’ Spring 2000 collection, ‘Summa Cum Laude’, the Pyramid bomber captures Simons’ fascination with youth, counterculture and music. Referencing Dutch gabber collective Rotterdam Terror Corps, Simons reinterprets their logo as a contrasting white triangular motif bearing the words ‘The Pyramid’. The result is an early distillation of the design language that would soon come to define his namesake label.

This jacket preserves a defining aspect of Simons’ approach to design at the turn of the millennium: using reference as a vessel for design. Applying a graphic and his own labels to a surplus MA-1 Fostex bomber, he transformed an existing garment through context rather than elaborate construction. Its significance lies in that distinction, leveraging the relationship between the image, the garment and the culture it evokes.

Preceding the Autumn 2001 ‘Riot! Riot! Riot!’ collection, the Pyramid bomber can be read as a precursor to the more confrontational work that followed. Rather than marking the beginning of his interest in subculture, it gives that interest a particularly direct expression.

Tagged as a size small, this piece features beautiful sun fading along the sleeve, alongside branding on the sleeve.
